Cathy Mark Exhibit - "Visions in Slate" On May 1st, the Gallery on the Lake opened for a fresh season with the launch of a solo exhibition by mixed media artist Cathy Mark. Patrons will have the opportunity to view a unique exhibit composed of mixed media paintings and mild steel metalwork. Ms. Mark's creativity is displayed in a vast assortment of subject matter. Wildlife, landscapes, abstracts and nudes round out this eclectic mix. Cathy's mixed media pieces are created with chalk pastel on slate. Her work on slate has become very diversified over the years. Along with paint and pastel she includes copper, brass, aluminum and cedar. Sunflowers have copper petals and shorelines are created from aluminum strips. She states that, "Sometimes the inspiration for a piece will occur before the stone is selected, other times the slate itself will dictate what it will become." Her metalwork portrays animals and nature. Dancing moose, bears and herons show her sense of humor and joy. Cathy studied art in Toronto and attended University in British Columbia where she majored in sculpture. She then returned to Ontario to complete a design course and begin work in the industry. Cathy lives and creates from her home studio on the north shore of Lake Scugog. She interacts with nature on a daily basis and this is directly reflected in her beautiful compositions. Nothing gives the artist more pleasure than to see a client connect with her art. "I create for that response. When you witness a real connection being made it provides purpose for my love of creating. I believe I am an instrument our creator uses to make beautiful things for others to enjoy." Ms. Mark has participated in many group and solo shows. She exhibits at the Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival each summer. The show opened May 1 and continues till May 21. Cathy was in attendance for an artist reception on May 8 from 2pm to 4pm, which was a big success. Come out and enjoy a truly unique experience! Open seven days a week 9-5 from May 1 to October 31.
