| Handmade silk embroidery named Sushu is traditional folk art that originated in China. It has a long history of over 2500 years and it is ranked one of the most important art forms in the Orient. Silk embroidery is appraised as a treasure of Chinese traditional arts for its beautiful patterns, harmonious colours and elaborate stitches. The special embroidery techniques and styles make silk embroidery outstanding and unique. After being handed down to generations of families, the custom is at risk. It may be lost as girls are not learning to do it. It takes patience and it is very hard on the eyes. The process starts by stretching a piece of silk over a wooden frame. A design is then sketched on the silk and only using the outline the artist brings the image to life in colour. Using pure silk, the thinness of the threads, size of the picture and its complexity adds to the difficulty and the cost. One strand can be divided into 16 smaller threads. The thinner the silk is, the finer the art. |
