SUSAN FISHER MA BFA Art Ed. Dipl.

September 29, 2012 marks the debut opening of Susan Fisher’s solo show at The Gallery on the Lake, Buckhorn, Ontario. She will be demonstrating the art of encaustic painting during the opening showcasing new works and directions in her creations.

Susan graduated from Concordia University, Montreal with an honours BFA and a post graduate diploma in Art Education. After experiencing the Canadian North while teaching, she continued her education and graduated from Trent University, Peterborough with a Master’s Degree specializing in Indigenous Art History.

Evolving from an early passion for printmaking and especially photography, she embraced the specialized techniques of encaustic painting, an ancient medium rediscovered and currently popular with a growing number of artists. She is a recognized and respected Encaustic instructor with the Haliburton School of the Arts and offers privately run workshops from her studio.

The various techniques involved with encaustic painting enable her to create translucent layers of colour in which she integrates fragments of her photo images. The completed painting glows with luminosity which creates changing moods as daylight plays across the surface. Through a complex layering of drawn, painted and photographed images, paintings are richly deep with texture, shape and colour.

She has had numerous solo shows in the Peterborough area, including a major solo show at the Art Gallery of Peterborough. Her work has been juried into a prestigious show in Sagamihara, Japan and has also been shown in Denver, Co., Toronto,ON and Canmore AB. Commissioned pieces hang in Philadelphia PA and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“I enjoy creating a visual feast for the eye by interweaving drawing & my photo images with layers of translucent encaustic painting. There are stories awaiting in these works for you to imagine as your own.”
