artwork Leonard Gibson has been carving for over 20 years. He carves and paints a variety of decorative wildlife sculptures using wood, driftwood, and antlers as his media. His current work includes stylized fish carvings, fish silhouette paintings, fish decoys, deer and moose antler carvings, and cottage signs. Len's fish decoys are hookless fishing lures up to 12" in length which have been used for hundreds of years by ice fishermen. This weighted lure is worked in a swimming motion through a large hole in the ice to attract larger hungry fish. A second fisherman would try to spear the fish. Decoys are still used in some areas where it is legal and they have become highly collectable. Len enjoys walks, fishing, and the study of all things related to nature in general. "I have always had a great appreciation for all things in nature. Creating wildlife sculptures has allowed my appreciation to grow. I would hope my work would give the same feelings to others." Len's carvings can be found in collections in private homes and cottages, and are on display in many galleries throughout Ontario. |
