artwork Nel’s training in both fine arts and commercial art has led her to work in various media such as screen print, watercolour, batik and acrylic before she developed her “Dyes on cotton, quilted” technique in 1981. Her versatility in design and love of colour is evident in the vibrant quilted pieces she produces. These pastoral scenes and floral displays are created through vivid and exciting patterns. Nel uses a delicate blend of textile inks and dyes which are painted on 100 % cotton. Sometimes they are used as watercolours and flow. Sometimes the shapes are controlled and hard-edged. When the painting is finished, the cotton is treated to set the dyes. Then, with fibrefill behind, the painting is stitched on the lines of the design. Then the quilt is stretched on stretchers, framed, and spray protected. Her works are in corporate and private collections in Canada and the United States. Her religious and abstract banners are found in churches and Christian institutions. |
